Come experience the evolving meaning of love this Valentine’s Day weekend!

Robert Schumann wrote Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love) in 1840 for voice and piano.  The texts for his songs come from poet Heinrich Heine’s Lyrisches Intermezzo.  This song cycle is considered part of the central core of the genre in musical literature.

It gets reinterpreted for 21stcentury by composer Christian Jost. Jost’s wife, Mezzo soprano Stella Doufexis had previously recorded Schumann’s Dichterliebe, which was unusual since the piece is traditionally sung by a male voice. Tragically, while Jost was writing his “reimagined” version of Dichterliebe, Stella passed away from an aggressive form of cancer.

Charged with the pain of her death, Christian Jost completed his own version of Dichterliebe in 2017 for voice and 9 instruments, raising essential questions about the nature of creativity and the role played by suffering in art.
